Helping Vodacom keep 15.5 million customers in constant contact

Vodacom, South Africa’s largest mobile network operator is providing a world-class GSM service to more than 15.5 million customers across Africa with the help of Australian-developed PROGNOSIS systems management software.

PROGNOSIS monitors and reports on critical HP NonStop and Windows servers for hardware malfunctions, capacity problems and application errors, and alerts Vodacom operators if a system bottleneck should threaten performance or service delivery. The ability to centrally monitor and manage geographically remote systems in environments such as Tanzania and Mozambique was critical to success of this new telecom network.

Read this fascinating account of how the entire network infrastructure was built in six shipping containers in South Africa, then trucked to Maputo, the capital of Mozambique – a three-day journey through difficult border checkpoints and countryside still strewn with landmines from the civil war.
